I’ve been feeling inspired lately. Particularly about my identity as a Filipino. I’ll spare everyone the lengthy inspo blurb. But if you didn’t know who Dr. Fe del Mundo was, now you do!

Altar Candles

Continuing my fili inspired illustrations: approximately 86% of ppl in Philippines identify as Catholic and my family is definitely included in that percentage. Growing up, altars and prayer candles were standard religious paraphernalia at home. I’m not very religious and don’t really subscribe to Catholicism but if I had prayer candles around I’d definitely need a little bit of strength, luck, and wealth

Translation note: “para sa” means “for”. Like, “for strength, luck, wealth”

Tiny Tindahan

Another fili inspired illustration: I have very fond memories of going to the tindahan (small street corner shop) growing up. I would always go with my cousins and we would split a soda between us in plastic bags (no filipinos really do this. Maximizes the yield of one soda can/bottle—yes it’s not sustainable but we were poor haha). These are some of my favourite snacks I’d usually get from the tindahan. Drawing this was nostalgic for me.
